What Is An Ignition Interlock?
An ignition interlock device is a breathalyzer for your vehicle.
How Do Ignition Interlock Devices Work?
Ignition Interlock starts as soon as you turn on the vehicle. You will have to blow into the mouthpiece connected to the car breathalyzer. Your breath-alcohol concentration (BAC) will be measured to ensure that there is a sober driver behind the wheel before you can begin driving. The device will also require retests while you are driving. Retest are forwarded to your monitoring authority.

FAQ
1. What do I bring to my appointment?
For installations we need Photo ID, Registration, Insurance and a J and S if the interlock is court ordered. For regular service clients only need to bring the vehicle and payment.
2. At what breath-alcohol concentration (BAC) level will my interlock device detect alcohol and record a failure?
.025
3. Will other people be able to drive the vehicle?
Yes, you can let other people drive your car. Just be aware that any HBAC (high Blood Alcohol content) recorded will be your responsibility.
4. What happens if I fail the breathalyzer test?
In the case your alcohol concentration exceeds a specified legal level, the interlock device temporarily prevents your vehicle from starting. There will be a lockout time of 5 minutes. If the second test is failed it will lock you out based on the level of alcohol detected.
5. What happens if you use mouthwash before blowing into the device?
Mouthwash contains alcohol so the device will say “test not passed” and will lock out for 5 min. We recommend waiting at least 15 minutes after using mouthwash to start your car.
6. What if I miss my monitoring appointment?
Your device will display “5 days to lock out”. As long as you make it in for service before the 5th day you will still be able to drive. A missed appointment will result in a $25 missed appointment fee. To avoid this fee you can always come in before your service date. We will always set you to your service date, in other words we never steal your days. Coming early means you will never be late. We also give you the option to pay with a credit card over the phone and that will prevent a late fee and you have 5 additional days to come for service.
7. If I miss my appointment, do I have to tow my vehicle in for service?
A missed appointment will not require a tow. If the device locks out all you need to do is call us for an unlock code.
8. What if the vehicle stalls in traffic?
If your vehicle stalls in traffic, it is not due to the interlock. The device will NEVER stop your vehicle . It is connected directly to your vehicle’s ignition system, the interlock device temporarily prevents your vehicle from starting if there is alcohol detected. If alcohol is detected while driving your car will lock out as soon as it is turned off.
9. Removing the interlock
Clients who have completed their time with the interlock will need to contact DWI Compliance via email at DWI.Reinstate@state.nm.us. Once they are cleared for reinstatement they will need to go and get their unrestricted driver license. The next step is to call to set up the removal.
10. “Can I keep my interlock in after I am reinstated and have a non restricted Driver License?”
The most effective way to prevent another DWI is to keep the interlock in Voluntary. The cost is only $59.81 per month, all taxes included. There are no late fees or HBAC fees for voluntary clients. Preventing the hassle of multiple DWIs is priceless.
